Scrubber Gully-1 hints at Mahalo CSG potential

EXPLORATION of the Mahalo Block in ATP 337, Bowen Basin, is off to a good start with the Scrubber Gully-1 coal seam gas well delivering encouraging results.

Field partner Comet Ridge said the well had intersected about 4.5m of net coal within the primary objective Bandanna Formation Coal Measure Sequence.

“We are quite encouraged by the gas and permeability results from the Bandanna coals from this well and will be working over coming weeks with the joint venture to plan the forward appraisal program for the Mahalo block, incorporating results from this well,” managing director Tor McCaul said.

He added that preliminary indications from the cored coal sections showed good gas content and fair permeability as indicated by a drill stem test on the main coal intersection.

McCaul said the cored coal was being further analysed and the results would be integrated into the existing permit database in order to plan the future appraisal and development of the block.

Scrubber Gully-1, which was plugged and abandoned as planned, was drilled in an area about 12 kilometres south of the Humbolt-1 exploration well and 11km southeast of the Mira-1 exploration well to test coals within the mapped contingent resource area.

Comet holds a 40% interest in the block while operator Santos and Origin Energy each hold 30%.
