Queensland releases CSG-LNG blueprint
QUEENSLAND has released a framework that outlines the state government’s plans to develop the world’s first coal seam gas-to-liquefied natural gas industry.
Premier Anna Bligh told the Queensland Parliament that the blueprint for the state’s LNG industry would balance domestic energy needs and environmental considerations against the extraordinary economic benefits, extra jobs and much-needed new export industry that CSG-LNG would bring.
The AAP quoted the premier as saying eight projects potentially worth $40 billion with the ability to create up to 18,000 direct and indirect jobs were vying to start up in the state.
She added that an LNG industry exporting 28 million tonnes per annum would see the government collect about $850 million a year in royalties.
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The LNG industry can do for Queensland what coal did to the Bowen Basin and the rest of the state in the 1970s and 1980s, and beyond.”
She acknowledged that while it was important to secure the state’s own gas needs, current known gas reserves were enough to supply the state’s power stations and a medium-scale LNG export industry for at least 50 years.
Queensland also released a regulatory impact statement on how to meet future domestic energy needs that would be considered by industry and community until October 15.
