QGC moving ahead in Surat

QUEENSLAND Gas Company has kicked off an exploration and appraisal drilling program to establish coal seam gas reserves in PL 171 of the Surat Basin.

Partner Victoria Petroleum said two drilling rigs were on location and carrying out coring and drill stem operations at the Lawton-3 and Latwon-4 core holes.

The Lawton wells are the first wells to be drilled by QGC, a BG Group business, and will be followed by up to 11 wells over the next 12 months to evaluate the CSG potential of the Walloon Coal Measures.

According to VicPet, PL 171 is interpreted to be situated in the prime Walloon coal seam gas fairway on the western side of the Surat Basin.

VicPet managing director John Kopcheff said the drilling program aimed to establish an initial 2P and 3P CSG reserves base for the permit.

The company holds a 20% interest in PL 171.
