Opposition lashes out at Garrett over CSG-LNG delay
THE federal opposition has called for Environment Minister Peter Garrett to be sacked over the delay in assessing applications for two coal seam gas to liquefied natural gas projects in Queensland.
Shadow minister for climate action, environment and heritage Greg Hunt said Garrett had botched the environmental protection process surrounding BG Group and Santos’ Queensland Curtis LNG and Gladstone LNG projects.
“The real question is why has Mr Garrett taken so long to put these requirements in place,” the Australian Associated Press quoted Hunt as saying.
“We have seen delays in the project, an absence of the protection of the environment.”
The Environment Minister had asked both companies to provide more information about their projects and pushed rulings on the two projects back to October 11.
He added that Garrett was mired in “catastrophes”.
“We've seen almost every day, whether it's Pink Batts, green loans, the solar debacle, and now the coal seam gas bungle - another example of chaos from Peter Garrett.”
Hunt called on Prime Minister Julia Gillard to either sack Garrett now or commit to not having him in cabinet after the election.
A spokesman for Garrett said the minister had acted in accordance with his legal obligations and taken '”the absolutely prudent and responsible approach”.
