Membrane tank gets tick of approval
LIQUEFIED Natural Gas Limited’s planned Fisherman’s Landing coal seam gas-to-LNG project in Queensland has taken another step forward after receiving approval for its membrane tank technology.
The company said Queensland authorities were satisfied that a membrane tank could provide safety levels equal to a traditional full containment LNG storage tank, subject to a number of conditions being in place.
LNG Limited said these conditions were acceptable and in accordance with good engineering practice, and would be incorporated into any future development approvals issued by the state government.
Managing director Maurice Brand said the approval could result in cost savings of about $A100 million, shave off six months from the schedule over a conventional nickel steel tank, and make meeting the company’s goal of shipping its first LNG cargo in late 2012 more likely.
“Some 29 membrane tanks have already been built globally including the major LNG importing countries, Japan and Korea,” he added.
LNG Limited subsidiary Gladstone LNG is planning to build and operate a 200,000 cubic metre membrane LNG tank at Fisherman’s Landing.
