ESG to kick off new CSG program in NSW

EASTERN Star Gas is gearing up for a two-well coal seam gas drilling program in PEL 6, northern New South Wales, as part of its farm-in to three Orion Petroleum licences.

Partner Orion Petroleum said the program would start in early November and would consist of drilling the Milguy-1 and Gwydir-1 CSG wells.

Milguy-1 will test the CSG potential of the Triassic Moolayember coals 20 kilometres northeast of the Moree township, while Gwydir-1, 20km south-southeast of Milguy-1, will test the Permian Maules Creek coals and Moolayember unit.

Orion said the coring of the target coal members would allow the joint venture partners to assess the thickness, gas content and reservoir properties of the coals encountered by the wells.

The program, to be carried out by the Boart Longyear Rig 1200-1, is expected to take about 60 days and will be followed by technical analysis of the recovered coal.

The two-well program will complete Eastern Star’s stage one and two farm-in to Orion’s PEL 428, 427 and 6 permits.

Eastern Star is operator and will hold a 75% interest in PEL 6, Orion will have 22.5% while private investors hold the remaining 2.5%.

Orion retains its 97.5% interest and operatorship of the PEL 6 conventional petroleum joint venture.
